ACS HOME

The Asheville Cinema Society (ACS) screens unique films of all genres that will not come to local movie theaters. Sometimes we have advance screenings of bigger films so our Members are the first in WNC to see them. After every film there is a Q&A with that night’s filmmaker or a specialist in the film’s subject matter. Our 3rd ACS Season will offer…

  • 18 FILMS FOR THE SEASON
    • 2 FILMS EACH MONTH - June to October & December (every other Tuesday at 7:15pm)
    • In November, each ACS Member receives 6 tickets to their choice of films at the Asheville Cinema Festival on November 1-4.  Click HERE for more details.
  • NEW MEMBERSHIP FEES
    • Single Membership = $150 ($8.30 per film average)
    • Couples Membership = $250 ($6.94 per film average)
    • Individual Tickets to ACS Season films are $16
  • LOCAL DISCOUNTS – ACS Members receive a Membership card that grants them discounts to local restaurants and businesses that are ACS Sponsors
  • NEW VENUE
    • The first film of each month will be in Downtown Asheville at Asheville Community Theatre.
    • The second film of the month will be at the Regal Biltmore Grande 15 in Biltmore Park.

Asheville Community Theatre - Downtown Asheville

Previous ACS Season Film - The Intouchables

ACS Members absolutely loved our 2nd Season ending film, The Intouchables. This French film is not only the highest grossing non-English film of all time, but is also now the highest-rated ACS film ever with a 5 star rating. After watching the film, there was no question as to why it broke box office records across Europe, already has an English-version remake scheduled, and was so popular that 52% of the French people voted it France’s Cultural Event of 2011. Based on a true story, the audience really connected with this tale of two people from different worlds who form a unique friendship. It was the character of Dress, masterfully played by Caesar Award winner Omar Sy, who drove the film and provided a perfect balance of bringing humor and gritty humanity. Very few actors could pull off such a difficult role that the film's appeal relied so heavily on.

This was a perfect ending to a fantastic 2nd Season, and the night was made even better with the delicious French pastries provided by Old Europe Pastries. Our screening of The Intouchables was one of the first in the U.S., and we won't be surprised if it is competing for this year's Best Foreign Film Oscar.

ACS Events

The Asheville Cinema Festival (ACF) returns November 1-4, 2012! The 2011 ACF was a big success with over 20 filmmakers attending with their films to do Q&As with the audiences. Best Picture Academy Award winner The Artist was our Opening Night film and Best of the Festival award winner. Audiences loved our lineup of US and international films that included multi-award winners from festivals around the world and a big hit from Sundance. Click HERE to visit the ACF website, see the films and events from 2011, and get a hint of what 2012 ACF will bring.

A great crowd turned out for our 1st Annual Oscars Party held this past Sunday at Olive or Twist Restaurant.  The biggest thrill was seeing The Artist win five Oscars including Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture.  We have been encouraging people to see this film since we showcased it at our Asheville Cinema Festival this past November as our Opening Night Film and winner of the Best Film of the Festival award.

The Artist still playing at few local theaters, so please go see it if you haven't.  It's an incredibly unique film that will not translate as good to television.  We believe all films should be seen in the theater, and this one more than any other!

We also had an Oscar Picks Contest for those in attendance. There were prizes for 8 major categories from Asheville Community Theatre (season passes), Old Europe Cafe & Pastries (gift certificates), Regal Cinemas (free movie tickets), and also ACS tickets and Memberships for the current season.

Each category was worth a certain number of points.  When several people chose the same winner of a category we put all the names in a hat in order to pick one.  The person who had the most overall points at the end of the night won the grand prize of 2 ACS Memberships for our upcoming 3rd Season.  And that winner was...  John Troia!

John narrowly won by only one point!  He isn't an ACS Member, only joined us for the night, but walked away with two memberships to our new season coming this summer.  There were several people just a few points off of the lead.  Thanks to everyone who played and joined us for the night!  We are already cooking up ideas for a very unique Oscars night next year!

A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to Mitch and the fantastic staff of Olive or Twist Restaurant for hosting our Oscar Party.  We received great feedback about their delicious food and tasty specialty drinks created for the night.  It was the perfect overall setting with couches, the wrap-around bar, and having the Oscars on their big projection screens and every TV.  Stop in there if you haven't been yet.  It's definitely one of the more unique spots in Downtown Asheville.

A big thank you to Vaso de Vino for hosting the ACS Member Wine Tasting Dinner this past Monday.  There was a great mix of different wines with everyone finding their own favorites and discovering new wines for the future. The information and history of each wine was very interesting, and we all emerged from the dinner much wiser in the world of wine.

Also, the food was DELICIOUS!  We expected it to be good, but the lasagna exceeded all expectations.  People kept asking for more bread in order to eat every last drop of the sauce!

If you haven't experienced a Wine Tasting Dinner at Vaso de Vino, then visit their website to see when the next monthly tasting dinner open to the general public is occurring.  You will not regret it!
